Mal Kelapa Gading

Mal Kelapa Gading (MKG) is a large mall in Kelapa Gading area in North Jakarta.

The mall actually consists of 5 adjacent malls, known as MKG1/2/3/4/5. It's a "mid-range" mall (cheaper than Plaza Indonesia, more expensive than Mangga Dua) and it's usually very crowded during weekend, but quiet during weekdays.

Shopping:
  • Supermarket: Farmers Market
  • Department stores: Star, Sogo
  • Several Food courts
  • Barbershops & Beauty salons
  • Century and Guardian Pharmacies
  • Sports shops
  • Batik Keris
  • Travel agencies
  • ...Much more! (click here for the complete directory of MKG)

La Piazza:
Outdoor restaurants and cafes (mainly western food), live music at night

Gading Food City:
Small outdoor restaurants (cheaper than La Piazza), lots of Indonesian food, live music at night

Tips:
  1. Try 'Swikee' (frog) in the food court in front of Farmers Market (MKG 1)
  2. Try Nasi Goreng from Sari 21 in Gading Food City (next to La Piazza)
  3. Try Japanese Teppanyaki from Okirobox (MKG 3, close to the food court)

Gastrobar MOODZ Epicentrum - Liquor Bar

Moodz is a gastrobar, a bistro with bar/club interior.

Moodz usually looks a bit empty... Don't know if they have a lot of customers but they do have lots of wine and some quite good special offers:

Phone: 5211666 / 33996781

Meal Package: rice, fried snacks, meat, vegetables for 27.000 rupiah.

Restaurant Madam Kwok Epicentrum - CLOSED DOWN (but still available in Kota Kasablanka)

Madam Kwok in EpiWalk / Epicentrum Mall has unfortunately closed down. However, they are still available in Kota Kasablanka!

Here is my review of the restaurant in Epicentrum. I have not been to the one in Kota Kasablanka, but I assume it has quite similar dishes.

I only ordered tahu kipas babah and lemon squash (30.000 and 26.000 rupiah). Nice tasteful tahu and good atmosphere. They have indoor as well as outdoor space.

Organic MSG-free Indonesian Restaurant in Jakarta: Warung Daun (Cikini Raya)

Warung Daun
Jl. Cikini Raya No. 26
Jakarta Pusat
Phone: 021-3910909

Warung Daun is a unique restaurant in Jakarta that serves organic traditional Indonesian food without MSG!

Indonesian food may taste great in many restaurants and even at cheap food courts, but it isn't always as healthy as the food at Warung Daun. Besides that, the food really tastes good, the prices aren't too high, the restaurant has a good atmosphere and a great outdoor terrace (with roof and aircon, good for hot or rainy days).

Bakwan jagung kentang
Nasi liwet sunda (their rice specialty)
 Tumis toge ikan asin
Sayur asem, lalap mentah
Sambal mentah (hot plate chili paste)
Sate maranggi
2 es teh
Free Krupuk :-)
For 180.000 rupiah (2 persons)

Indian and Pakistani Food in Jakarta - Koh-e-Noor

Koh-e-Noor restaurant - Indian and Pakistani Kitchen @ Pasar Festival (Ground Floor)
Jl. Rasuna Said C-22, Jakarta Selatan
Phone number (for delivery services): 021 527 6531

For people who are looking for Indian and Pakistani food in Jakarta, Koh-e-Noor is one of the most popular and famous Indian / Pakistani restaurants in Jakarta:

The Jakarta Post (the most popular daily English language newspaper) wrote about this restaurant (July 2007):

'Koh-e-Noor: Indian dishes in a pleasant environment Surely the most famous item of any kind to come out of India was the fabulous diamond known as the "Koh-e-Noor" or "Mountain of Light".

Mined at Golconda when India and not South Africa was the world center of diamond mining, this jewel aroused great feelings, not least amongst the imperialist British who succeeded in acquiring it for their royal family.'

"Koh-e-Noor" has become an extremely popular name for Indian restaurants around the globe and so it is no surprise that there is one of this name in Jakarta.

Located on the ground floor of Pasar Festival in Kuningan district, it offers "Indian and Pakistani cuisine" in a comfortable, pleasantly decorated but unpretentious environment.

One of the very first things you will register here is the length and breadth of the menu. Over 200 food and drink items are available and this, of course, means that unless you had your mind made up before going in you need ample time to consider your order.... (The Jakarta Post, July 2007)

Kelapa Gading 'Creating Food Adventure': Buah Potong Campur

Creating Food Adventure is a unique food court at Mall Kelapa Gading 5 (3rd floor) with lots of local food and plenty of traditional Indonesian decorations, like an old 'Gerobak' (food sellers' cart), traditional food utensils and a kretek cigarette box collection.

I already had lunch before, so I only bought 'buah potong campur' (mixed fruit slices: buah = fruit, potong = pieces/slices, campur = mixed): a box full of melon, water melon and papaya.
