Wine & Cheese Expo Jakarta 11 - 27 May 2012

The Wine & Cheese Expo takes place at La Piazza (outdoor space in Kelapa Gading Mall) from 11 - 27 May 2012 and is part of the Jakarta Fashion and Food Festival Jakarta.

It's called an 'expo', but actually it's more like a bazaar. The most famous wine shops from Jakarta 'exhibit' their wine collection and visitors can see, taste and buy wine from France, Italy, Germany, South-Africa, Australia and several other countries.

The prices vary from around 300.000 to 5 million rupiah. A regular bottle of wine costs around 400.000 - 550.000 rupiah.

I'm not crazy about wine events (even less about cheese events), but the good thing about this one is that they DON'T make wine something pretentious. The Wine & Cheese Expo is definitely not only for the snobby ones among us. Everyone can walk around and taste wine. The expo makes wine more accessible for Indonesians who don't know a lot about wine or even never tasted wine before.

The cheese part of the expo is kind of 'neglected'. You will find some cheese sellers, but you can find the same stuff in supermarkets with imported products, like Kem Chicks in Pacific Place or Food Hall in Plaza Indonesia.

The Wine & Cheese Expo is a good opportunity to see and taste some wine (and cheese) if you are in Mal Kelapa Gading anyway, but I personally wouldn't go there just for the expo. Firstly, because I'm from Europe and wine isn't so special for me. Secondly, the prices are comparable to the prices in most wine shops in Jakarta (expensive!) and thirdly, because it's more like a small bazaar than a real expo (you can walk around and see all wine and cheese in less than 30 minutes).
